Stem Cell Treatment for Pain

A growing number of patients are turning to regenerative medicine to treat dozens of conditions – and more applications for it are discovered every day. This includes using stem cells to treat joint and musculoskeletal pain due to common orthopedic conditions like tendon injuries and moderate to severe osteoarthritis. This exciting, minimally invasive alternative to surgery has already benefitted more than a million patients to date.

Stem cell therapy uses cells from a patient’s own body to regenerate tissue to speed and improve healing in an area of injury. Adult stem cells – a type of blank-slate cell capable of becoming many different types of cells – are located throughout a person’s body, most abundantly in the bone marrow.

During stem cell treatment, your doctor will use a needle to withdraw bone marrow from your lower back, concentrate the solution in a centrifuge, then inject it back into an injured area of your body. At its new location, the stem cells will turn into and function like the cells typically found at that location. For example, bone, cartilage, and ligaments.

How soon you experience relief will depend on the location and severity of your injury. It is important to note, too, that stem cell therapy is not an immediate fix; it will take weeks to months for healthy new cells to replace damaged cells in the injured area.

Regenerative therapies like stem cell treatment offer an innovative way to treat a variety of orthopedic issues, including:

  • Spine
    • Discogenic back pain
    • Osteoarthritis of facet joints
    • Degenerative disc disease
  • Shoulder
    • Partial rotator cuff tears
    • Labral tears
    • Mild to moderate osteoarthritis
  • Hip
    • Osteoarthritis
    • Labral tears
    • Articular cartilage injuries
  • Knee
    • Osteoarthritis
    • Partial ligament tears
    • Partial meniscal tears
    • Augmented ACL or PCL reconstruction
  • Foot and Ankle
    • Mild to moderate osteoarthritis
    • Tendon inflammation
    • Partial Achilles tendon tear

While most insurance policies do not cover the cost of the procedure, regenerative medicine remains an effective alternative to surgery for a wide range of health issues, including orthopedic injuries and conditions.
